Novel opportunity for adaptation of antibiotic resistant bacteria? Plasmids harbouring genes encoding the prebiotic utilization
Original language description
The fos genes responsible for short-chain fructooligosaccharide (scFOS) utilization has been recently found on chromosome and IncHI1 plasmids of pathogenic bacteria. The plasmids encoding prebiotic metabolism could play a key role as a transitional link in the adaptation of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria. In the collection consisting of 11000 AMR isolates we detected 307 isolates harbouring fos genes. We present their genetic background and suggest their possible mobilization on plasmids harbouring antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) or virulence factors as well.
