    Analysis of antibiotic utilization in hospitalized paediatric patients.

    Objective To analyze the quantitative, qualitative and economic parameters of antibiotic prescription in hospitalized paediatric patients, while considering patients´ health conditions. Method Retrospective study of case records of children hospitalizedin a district hospital during 2003. Results Antibiotics were prescribed to 716 (37.3%) out of 1,918 hospitalized children. Average time of hospitalization associated with antibiotic therapy was 7.7 days. The range of antibiotics used included 37 active ingredients (including three combinations) in 52 different preparations (differentiated by brand names). If various concentrations and dosage forms are taken into account, there were 77 drug presentations. Procaine benzyl penicillin was the medicine mostfrequently utilized (13.0%), and penicillins generally constituted the most frequently preferred antibiotic group (37.7%). Conclusion Prescription and drug utilization analyses identify the therapeutic values of medicines more precisely.
