Gene Polymorphsms and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
Original language description
The etiopathogenesis of inflammatory bowel diseases is not fully understood to date. However, several studies have confirmed that there are external factors, together with genetic predisposition, which contribute to the diseases' onset. Genes whose products somehow influence the development of the inflammatory reaction are called "candidate genes". At present, the correlation between the genetic constitution of an individual and the predisposition to disease has been studied as well as its connection with the clinical characteristic of a disease (e.g. NOD2/CARD15, ICAM-1, CCR5, MDR1, TLR4 genes). IBD therapy is lengthy; therefore it requires an individual choice of a drug with an aim to reduce or eliminate adverse effects. The presence of variant alleles of polymorphisms in "therapeutic genes" can be of significant help in predicting the adverse effects of a given therapy. The relationship between myelosupression and the presence of variant alleles in the gene for TPMT is of the greate
