The paper lists and discusses Vilém Mathesius?s (1882-1945) principal translations of poetry and prose, both published separately (H. G. Wells: Angličan se dívá na svět, 1922; Výbor z Canterburských povídek Geoffreye Chaucera, 1927) and interspersed in his History of English Literature (Dějiny literatury anglické, I. 1910, II. 1915) as well as his scholarly papers (e.g. Problém anglických lidových balad, VČA 24, 1915). The paper outlines and evaluates his translation technique formulated in his papers on the problems of translation into Czech (e.g. O problémech českého překladatelství, 1912/13, Poznámky o překládání cizího blankversu a o českém verši jambickém vůbec, 1947) and his notes accompanying his translations. It also defines his position withinthe development of Czech translation theory and practice.
