Gender Differences in Characteristics of Giftedness Scale Scores in Preschool Children
Original language description
The paper deals with gender differences in the total score of Characteristics of Giftedness Scale. Data were obtained in a large-scale screening of intellectual giftedness in pre-schoolers (N = 805). The method has been filled by teachers. The results suggest that 35 (4% of all pre-schoolers) exceptionally gifted children could be expected to enter first grade of elementary school. Interestingly, when looking at gender differences, our screening seems to favour girls as generally more gifted than boys. This difference might be associated with generally faster biological maturation of girls as well as different paths of brain development (young female brain is supposed to be better predisposed to good verbal performance and fine motor skills, which arethe most essential components of school readiness). However, it can be partly also caused by gender stereotypes (all of the evaluators, as well as the author of the screening measure, were women).
