Ha a World Literature fogalmának genealógiáját szeretnénk végigkövetni, válószínuleg vissza kellene nyúlnunk a humanisták Irodalmi Köztársaságáig. Azonban a jelenkori vita premisszáit Goethe fektette le, aki az 1820-as években többször is emlegeti a Weltliteraturt. Leveleiben, recenzióiban és Eckermannal való Beszélgetéseiben fellelheto gondolatai nem szisztematikusak, s ellentomondásokban is bovelkednek.
