    In-between Performance & Pedagogy: Immanence/Border-Crossings/Failure

  • Original language description

The present text, a manifesto of a kind, investigates the effect of binary collapse in the humanities, especially in ELT. Rather than a paper proper, it is a series of trajectories and reflections concerning pedagogy and/as performance. Methodologically I am going to focus on Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, hence their philosophy constitutes an intervention into binary understanding of the world. The thought of Deleuze and Guattari accentuates multiplicity, interconnectedness and humanity – which are analogously crucial aspects of the present project. I am convinced that the dichotomies and binaries in the class have become redundant. Rather than the binary nature, I would like to suggest the mutual interconnectedness of various elements in education, therefore as a chief methodological apparatus I am going to use the notion of immanence. I largely built my argumentation on the conceptual pedagogical strategies of Guillermo Gómez-Peña, most notably on his radical guerrilla approach of so-called border-crossing. As a case study, I am going to examine the project of cryptozoology which my colleague James David Clubb and I devised with our students. The project builds on the premise that public discourse has always been binary driven. Reversing such a dichotomy, the findings of the paper reflect the cryptozoology project’s outcomes as well as arrive at the conclusion that the immanent pedagogy, rather than building walls, accentuates the erasing of borders or at least the crossing of them, a venture that may come with risks.
