LEARNING HISTORY THROUGH STORIES ABOUT EAST GERMANY
Original language description
The article presents the results in which university students – majoring in teaching German as the FL – expressed their ability, viewpoint and experience with using contemporary German literature to understand the life in East Germany as a part of history of the 20st century. The research was carried out in the winter term 2016 and 2017 on the basis of the following books, all awarded / nominated for the German Book Prize: Eugen Ruge In Zeiten des abnehmenden Lichts (2011, In Times of Fading Light); Lutz Seiler Kruso (2014); Uwe Tellkamp Der Turm (2008, The Tower); Angelika Klüssendorf Das Mädchen (2011, The Girl). The aim of my literary course is, firstly, to give the skills to read literature as a resource for understanding the life and historical change to that effect how other people experience emotional issues; secondly, to give students an outline of the life in East Germany, to see the parallels with other countries in the Eastern Bloc and arise students’ interest in history of other countries in the Eastern Bloc. Thirdly, to practice writing and speaking in discussions and last but not least, to encourage enhancing of communicative competences in FL. In practical examples the author presents the ways how a teacher can enrich the FL lessons with literary text since literature in FLT is an issue not to be neglected by institutions training future teachers of FL.
