Challenges and Opportunities for Character Education in the Czech Republic

  • Original language description

Character education, translating imperfectly into Czech as either “vzdělávání” (cognitive development) or “výchova” (moral, ethical development), remains novel and often met with skepticism in the Czech educational context. Teachers fear it as an added burden, yet it aims to enrich students holistically through teachers’ daily interactions and the entire school environment, rather than adding more subjects. The Faculty of Education in Hradec Králové has offered a course on character education since 2021, training future teachers to integrate moral character development into their teaching. Inspired by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtue and John Amos Comenius’ philosophy, the course emphasizes virtues, holistic education, and natural, non-violent instruction. Students appreciate the interactive methods and self-experiential learning, applying character formation tools to themselves. The Centre for Character Development promotes the topic nationwide, aiming to integrate character education across all levels of schooling and raise public awareness through conferences, publications, and collaborations. Long-term research highlights the significant impact educators and schools have on students’ moral development, making character education an essential, integral part of the educational process in the Czech Republic.
