The Role of the International Organization for Migration in the Assistance to Ukrainian Refugees in Czechia and Poland

  • Original language description

This chapter discusses the role of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Czechia and Poland during the first two years of the Ukrainian displacement situation in the respective countries. Based on an interpretive analysis of IOM’s YouTube videos, we examine the specifics of IOM operations in incipient refugee crises. After mapping the situation in Poland and Czechia, we analyze how IOM responded and how it navigated this new terrain ‘for the benefit of all’ (IOM, Who we are. Retrieved July 9, 2024, from https://www.iom.int/who-we-are, 2024). We then consider other actors who IOM cooperated with, especially UNHCR, another key UN agency focused on similar target groups. Finally, we discuss the limits of assistance provided by IOM and what can be done to address these shortcomings. All of this is considered within the context of global migration governance and what different actors, including international organisations and states, can do in supporting migrants including refugees.
