The article shows cultural differences in perception and understanding of the academic register in the English speaking countries and Central European countries and explains the reasons why students at a Czech university are not proficient enough at writing. Moreover, it analyses student's written works and highlights the most frequent mistakes students usually tend to make in their formal writing, particularly in their essays at the Faculty of Informatics and Management of the University of Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic.
