An essential part of studies at faculties preparing students in the area of computer science is the development of student?s programming skills. Despite a heroic academic effort and many different theoretical researches which deal with the question of how to develop these skills, a substantial minority of students fails introductory programming course. We observed this fact at our university and noticed it?s similar at other universities. Saeed Dehnadi designed in 2006 a test focused on programming aptitude. His test asserts to predict success or failure of novices in the field of programming. We have used it to test our freshmen at the beginning of their first programming course. The aim of this paper is to discuss the obtained results. Firstly, we introduce our approach to developing algorithmic thinking of freshmen studying at the Faculty of Informatics and Management, University of Hradec Králové.
