Applying persuasive principles to influence students in adopting deeper learning approaches
Original language description
This paper discusses the development, evaluation and sharing of Persuasive Learning Objects (PLOTs) in teaching database concepts for Computing and Business computing students. Persuasion is not a new concept in education; tutors have used it in variousforms to influence students? learning behaviour in the classroom. The challenge is to apply the persuasive concepts effectively through digital e-learning technologies, especially in the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). BJ Fogg (2003) paves the way inproviding the structure around which people understand and apply persuasive design, mediated through computer technology. In the paper we explore how persuasive learning designs can be effectively applied in development of PLOTs which are then used within VLE with the aim of changing students? behaviour towards adopting a deeper learning approach. Results indicate a degree of behaviour change towards becoming more self-regulated learners.
