The primary objective of the text is to explore the Costa Rican party system on the grounds of the new trends in voters? behaviour that have recently started to emerge in Costa Rican politics. These trends such as elevated voter abstention level, upsurgein electoral volatility, voter dealignment and extending disillusionment with politics among voters will be examined in the context of the 2010 Presidential and Parliamentary elections with the aim of revealing their real effects on the Costa Rican party system. For that purpose the concept of party system institutionalization from Scott Mainwaring will be applied. Attention will be given primarily to the measurement of the key indicators of the level of party system institutionalization to determine how significant these changes in voters? behaviour are and whether they mark a gradual process of party system destabilization in Costa Rica.
