  • Original language description

Review article of Ivo Vasiljev: Living with Several Languages, which was published as part of a sociolinguistic project aimed at analyzing the language situation in the Czech Republic. Its author, Ivo Vasiljev – a Czech orientalist, polyglot, philologist, interpreter, translator, teacher, writer and archaeologist – was co-founder of the Department of Vietnamese Studies at Charles University in Prague and gained international recognition, as long ago as the Vietnam War, as a Southeast Asia political analyst. Vasiljev’s autobiography provides important insights into multilingual education and upbringing, inviting us to rethink the way languages are taught in schools and emphasizing above all the need to teach them from an early age, which benefits not only individuals but society as a whole. The book is also an appeal to parents, and anyone involved in looking after the young, to devote as much time and care as possible to teaching children their mother tongue and motivating them to find out about the world around them.
