The Interaction between the Bohemian Royal Towns and their Relation to the Cities of Central Europe in 1526-1620

  • Original language description

If we look at the most famous syntheses mapping the history of early modern European cities, we soon find that there is largely lack of research results on a large part of the Central European urban space, which includes Bohemian royal towns. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to point out in the context of the Lands of the Bohemian Crown the specificity of the Bohemian urban space and the development of the interaction between the Bohemian royal towns and marginally also their ties to the cities of Central Europe. In order to understand the conditionality of these interactions, the paper deals with the situation in the estate monarchy, as the Bohemian royal towns participated in its functioning. It is possible to notice how especially the political, economic, and cultural ties formed between Bohemian royal towns changed substantially within several decades. The problems are observed from the accession of the Habsburgs on the Bohemian throne; however, the study overlaps into earlier periods, if necessary, in order to explain the cause of some historical phenomena, influencing the development of the Bohemian royal towns in 1526–1620, i.e. in the era usually called the Pre-White Mountain Period.
