Daily courses of carbon assimilation characteristics in beech leaves exposed to ambient and elevated CO2 concentration

  • Original language description

In this study, we estimated the major photosynthetic responses of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) seedlings to the impact of elevated carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]). We focused on the diurnal changes in Rubisco (ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/ oxygenase) enzyme activity. Rubisco catalyses carboxylation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP), the first step of photosynthetic carbon assimilation, in competition with oxygenation of RuBP that leads to the photorespiratory pathway. Our analysisshows that the short-term exposure to elevated [CO2] doesn?t change the carboxylation properties of Rubisco enzyme. The significant increase in CO2 assimilation rate is thus caused mainly by the suppressed photorespiration.

Denní chody asimilace uhlíku v listech buku vystaveného přirozené a zvýšené koncentraci CO2
