Mining induced seismicity: moment tensor vs. shear-tensile/implosion model. Case study of Ridgeway, E. Australia gold mine
Original language description
The mechanism of a seismic event is a parameter of crucial importance retrieved from seismic data as it carries information on the way of fracturing of the rock mass in its hypocenter. Taking advantage of the linearity of the inverse task, the moment tensor (MT) has become the default tool for description of the mechanism of natural earthquakes and induced events as well, including rockbursts in mines. The MT is a general dipole source, but for practice it may be too general, its generality causing troubles during its reconstruction from noisy data in the inverse process, which may be additionally ill-conditioned due to inexact hypocenter location and/or availability of a rough velocity/attenuation model only. Then, the retrieved source may be biased, containing artifacts of a low-quality data or the inconsistent inverse problem. It seems reasonable to assume a simpler source model directly describing the physical phenomena anticipated in the particular focus.
