Is it a great extension of the human mind that should be cherished or should its development and use be limited? This essay aims to shed light on these tantalizing questions from a general, philosophical perspective. Why is AI being developed, and what is the purpose of using it? What does it mean for mankind, for our future? The answers can be traced in the development of the field to date and explain both the urge to develop it further and the urge to control it.
