A survey of effects of excessive bromide intake on iodine metabolism in the rat.
Original language description
We studied the effects of an increased bromide intake, at different levels of iodine supply to the organism, on various aspects of iodine metabolism in the rat. A reduction of the food intake and consequently of the body weight gain was observed in ratsdrinking water with the highest bromide concentration (5 g bromide per liter). An increase in the relative weight of the thyroids and a significant decrease in the 24-h uptake of radioiodide by the thyroids were also found in these animals, especially inthose fed a research low-iodine diet. The concentration ratio [I]/[Br] in the thyroids proved to be a very sensitive marker of even negligibly increased bromide intake in the rats.
