Loss of activity-dependent Arc gene expression in the retrosplenial cortex after hippocampal inactivation: Interaction in a higher-order memory circuit

  • Original language description

Expression of the IEG Arc induced in retrosplenial cortex (RSC) after navigation in water maze depends on input from the hippocampus. Bilateral hippocampal inactivation by TTX or muscimol markedly reduced Arc expression in the RSC. Unilateral inactivation resulted in more moderate, but bilateral reduction of Arc expression. The study shows that loss of hippocampal input alters activity of neurons in RSC and compromises their ability to engage IEG-dependent plasticity
