Stephanian C fauna and dispersed cuticles from a borehole in the Líně Formation, Mšeno-Roudnice Basin (Czech Republic)
Original language description
Mudstone and coal layer from drill core 906648 Katusice have yielded animal and plant fossils from the Stephanian C (Gzhelian) Zdětín Horizon (Líně Formation, Mšeno-Roudnice Basin, Czech Republic). A diversified assemblage of dispersed cuticles came from a thin coal seam. The assemblage consists of cuticles of different plant groups: lycopsids, sphenopsids (Sphenophyllum), and pteridosperms represented by five cuticular types – among them Neuropteris cordata and N. pseudoblissii. Marattialean ferns, otherwise common in Stephanian C strata, are represented only by a sporangium. Unidentified cuticles may also belong to ferns. Seed cuticles (possibly from pteridosperms) were also detected. Additionally, conducting tissues and a lycopsids megaspore were obtained. No evidence of cordaitalean and conifer cuticles has been found. Among animal remains, an anthracosiid bivalve shell, scales and a jaw fragment of actinopterygian fishes were discovered. Scales of Sphaerolepis kounoviensis prove a Stephanian C age for the Katusice locality and the Zdětín Horizon.
