    The paper proposes an explanation of the hysteresis in shape memory alloys using stability considerations and the entropy criterion. The effective minimum energy is shown to be a concave function of elongation, thus giving a phase equilibrium curve of nonpositive slope. The processes must satisty the entropy criterion for moving phase interfaces. This fact leads to the hysteresis.
