Biologically Active Substances Treated with Supercritical Fluids.
Original language description
Supercritical fluids are nowadays finding application both in laboratories and in large-scale technologies. Their properties make them useful as extremely versatile solvents possessing very good transport properties. Pressurized carbon dioxide is the most frequent supercritical solvent, which is inert, non-toxic, environmentally beneficial in comparison with organic solvents, and which can be easily removed by depressurization. This survey is focused on the possibilities of handling biologically activematerials with supercritical fluids. In addition to already conventional processes such as supercritical fluid extraction and fractionation, new areas of application open in such diverse fields as pharmaceutical industry (micronization of solid materials), enzymatic reactions (especially when reaction mixture contains non-polar substances like lipids), and food/beverage sterilization at low temperatures. The references are limited to review papers and to a selection of most recent public
