Enrichment of Savory Extract with Volatile Compounds Using Supercritical Fluid Extraction
Original language description
Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) using carbon dioxide has been widely studied as a modern, environmentally friendly method to separate high-added value compounds from plants that allows dissolving preferably the required compounds by changing extraction pressure and temperature. The extracts and essential oil of savory (Satureja hortensis L.) have demonstrated antimicrobial and insecticidal activity. Supercritical technology allows preparation of savory extracts with biological activity significantly higher than that of isolates obtained by conventional separation methods. Supercritical extraction with consequent fractionation of the extract in two separators maintained at different conditions (pressure and temperature) was applied. The efficiencyof SFE in terms of volatile fraction composition and yield was compared with the products of hydrodistillation and Soxhlet extraction.
