There is a recognized trend to extend functionality of optical plane beyond mere point-to point transmission of data. Enabling devices for optical networking are becoming to appear on the market. All-optical routing is the one technology that has to be developed and deployed to fully fulfil the promises of optical networking. The objective of this introductory presentation will be to set up the scene for fruitful discussion on the subject of all-optical routing.
