    Performance limits of 10Gbit/s transmission over standars single mode fibre without the deployment of in-line erbium-doped fibre amplifiers are evaluated by means of numerical simulation. The effect of group velocity dispersion compensation scheme, degree of GVD compensation of the SMF, input optical powers to SMF and to the DCF has been investigated with the aim to maximize the distance between transmitter and receiver.
