  • Original language description

    In this report the most important results achieved in the framework of the European COST 266 Action in the period 1999 to 2003 is presented. It deals with physical limitations in transmission systems, circuit/wavelength switching and routing and opticalburst/packet switching. Availability analysis and description of tools for optical network design are also presented. Evolution of next generation optical networks is discussed and a proposal for a follow-up Action is given.
