Toluene sorption on Czech bituminous coals
Original language description
This paper reports on a study of the sorption of toluene vapours on three medium-volatile bituminous coals from the Václavovice, Paskov and Trojanovice mines in the Upper Silesian Basin in the Czech Republic. The coal samples were characterized using various petrographic, chemical and porous texture analysis methods. Toluene sorption and desorption isotherms were measured on powdered coal samples at temperatures of 30°C and 50°C and at pressures ranging up to saturation, using a gravimetric sorption analyzer. The desorption isotherms showed no overlap of the sorption isotherms, and formed open hysteresis loops. Based on the results obtained in the course of the experiments, it was determined that the toluene adsorbed capacity depends on the temperature, the porosity and the maceral fractions present in the coal structure. The Václavovice coal, which had the biggest vitrinite content, sorbed the greatest amount of toluene of 11.0 mg/g at 50°C, while the Trojanovice coal, which had the lowest vitrinite content, sorbed the lowest amount of toluene of 8.1 mg/g at that same temperature and relative pressure of 0.99. The sorption capacity of toluene also correlated well with the mesopores present in the coal structures.
