The investigated sword was uncovered in the basilica of the important Great Moravian settlement in Mikulčice. The importance of this 9th century weapon is demonstrated by the tomb (No.580), which ranks amongst the most important Great Moravian graves. The interred, who belonged to the highest Great Moravian nobility, held among others artefacts the sword with a blade consisting of steel cutting edges welded on a central steel core. Quenching of the edges however cannot be proved by the examination; thequality of the sword is discussed in the paper.

Czech description
Zkoumaný meč byl objeven v bazilice významného velkomoravského sídliště v Mikulčicích. Význam diskutované zbraně, datované do 9. stol., je demonstrován vlastní hrobkou (č. 580), která náleží k nejvýznamnějším velkomoravským hrobům. Pohřbený, který náležel k nejvyšší velkomoravské elitě, měl kromě jiného meč s čepelí sestávající z ocelových břitů navařených na středové ocelové jádro. Kalení břitů však nebylo metalograficky prokázáno; kvalita meče je v článku diskutována.
