Experimental tinning of iron. An attempt to identify techniques of tinning used by ancient craftsmen
Original language description
Tinning of iron is a technique performed for various purposes. It enhances the visual appearance of iron and improves its protection against corrosion. Its non toxic and tasteless properties makes it a particularly appropriate technique to coat untensils. Finally it also provides a suitable surface for soldering or served as a solder itself. Several techniques of tinning were used in ancient times. The characteristics of the tinning layer (composition, thickness, porosity, regularity, surface appearance, adhesion, localization) depend on how the coating was produced. Methods of tinning used in the past were experimentally reproduced to characterize the obtained tinning layers.
