The Concept of Democracy in the Political Thought of T. G. Masaryk

Original language description

Masaryk built his concept of democracy on several assumptions related to the ideals of the Enlightenment (possibilty of progress related to the positive development of individuals as wel as societies ) and to major values and principles of original Christianity (inner equality of people, ideal of justice, concept of love, moral principles). He perceived cultural and political democratization as the most reliable path to general progress, including the possibility of solving deep social problems. In thisrespect his concept differed from the liberal concept of democracy, which ignored the importance of collective identity of people and nations (historical, cultural) as well as the necessity for respect of the level of development of each nation in its struggle for functional democracy.

Czech description

Masarykův koncept demokracie vyrůstal z několika předpokladů vztahujících se k osvícenským ideálům (možnost pokroku ve vztahu k pozitivnímu rozvoji jednotlivců a společnosti) i k původním křesťanským hodnotám (vnitřní rovnost lidí, ideál spravedlnosti, koncept lásky, mravní principy). Považoval kulturní a politickou demokracii za nejspolehlivější cestu k obecnému pokroku včetně možnosti řešit sociální problémy. V tomto ohledu se jeho koncept lišil od liberalistického konceptu demokracie, který ignorovaljak důležitost kolektivní identity lidí (historické, kulturní) tak nutnost ohledu na úroveň každého jednotlivého národa v úsilí o funkční demokracii.
