Biopolymer of Dictyosphaerium chlorelloides chemical characterization and biological effects

  • Original language description

Some microalgae are producers of high-value phytochemicals of interest for industrial applications. Cultivation of Dictyosphaerium chlorelloides microalgae yielded about 1 g/L of a viscous exobiopolymer with a high molecular weight (M-p, = 9.6 x 10(5) g/mol). Its proteoglycan character was confirmed by the presence of proteins and carbohydrates. Dominant sugars of the biopolymer were galactose and its methyl-derivatives (similar to 42 wt%), rhamnose (18 wt%), mannose (14 wt%) and unidentified methyl-hexoses (12 wt%). Besides, glucose and 3-0-methyl derivative (8 wt%), xylose and 4-0-methyl-derivative (4 wt%), and arabinose (2 wt%) were found. Methylation analysis indicated a complex chemical structure. Immunobiological studies revealed the effective anti-proliferative capacity of the biopolymer in vitro in both cancer and non-cancer cell lines. Based on in vitro exposition using a reconstructed 3-D tissue model, a good bioavailability and a low toxicity of the biopolymer have been found. Exposition of RAW 264.7 macrophages to the biopolymer resulted into significant immunostimulation of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines, and decreased free radical cell release.
