  • Original language description

    Intensification of forestry, driven by increasing timber demand, threatens forest biodiversity. To mitigate this conflict the Triad framework proposes to combine areas of intensively, extensively, and unmanaged forests. We evaluated how different proportions of these management categories in a landscape affected biodiversity. We focused on six taxa in European beech forests. We show that unmanaged forests are the backbone of biodiversity conservation while intensive management can benefit some taxa through the creation of open habitats. Extensive forest management, however, did not contribute to biodiversity conservation to the expected level. We conclude that to preserve forest biodiversity in Europe, we should increase the proportion of unmanaged forests and the amount of structures supporting biodiversity in extensively managed forests.
