Godfrey of Viterbo and his Readers at the Court of Emperor Charles IV
Original language description
The writings of Godfrey of Viterbo found their late-medieval readers in many countries. This holds equally true for Bohemia in the period of the Luxembourg dynasty, especially under Charles IV (1346?78): the distribution of Godfrey's works has influencedthe historical culture in medieval Bohemia. The two examples discussed in this article, the chronicle of John of Marignolli and the mural paintings cycle in the castle of Karlštejn, are clear evidence that Godfrey's works also found their readers at theimperial court in Prague. Marignolli found the inspiration for his chronicle in Godfrey's work and wrote the history according to the imperial ambition of Charles IV. The author of the mural paintings cycle in the castle of Karlštejn used the principleof the writings of Godfrey of Viterbo and drew the genealogical line from Noah to Charles IV.
