Rousseau’s Republican Theory and Nature. The Case of Corsica
Original language description
The paper examines one particular aspect of Rousseau’s political theory: the relation between the republican Commonwealth and nature in his Project for the constitution of Corsica. Rousseau is one of the leading figures of republicanism and his Project for the constitution of Corsica presents a concrete application of his theory as expressed in the Social Contract. Although Rousseau considers nature from anthropological perspective, he refuses the general view of his time according to which man should control nature and draw profit from it. Nature should satisfy our natural needs but not provide profit for us. The limit is clearly set by the self-sufficiency of political body. In order to maintain their independence, the Corsicans must content themselves with their island. Nature provides us with everything we need to satisfy our needs but we must always bear in mind that the goal of political society is the liberty of its members, together with equality and justice, not the growth of wealth. Rousseau thus manages to think (civil) liberty and abundance simultaneously: by emphasizing the virtue of mediocrity, Rousseau proves it is possible for a Republic to occupy space and exploit its natural environment without corrupting it and without territorial expansion.
