The Conquest of Nature by Men in the work of Alexis de Tocqueville
Original language description
The paper examines the possible theoretical concept of self-limitation of men’s use of nature in the work of Alexis de Tocqueville. In classical interpretation, Tocqueville has been seen as a liberal thinker, yet the stress he puts on the importance of political participation in order to maintain the political liberty and on the need to sustain “public spirit” among citizens reveals some rather “republican” aspects of his work. So does his awareness of the terrible consequences of economic and capitalist system in the terms of misery of working class and ugliness of landscape in contemporary England. The question is whether this affected his theory of democracy in America. Tocqueville, inspired here largely by Rousseau and his Reveries, admires the beauty of the virgin landscape in America (Quinze jours dans le désert), while denouncing the search for a short-term profit leading to the conquest and destruction of nature. For Tocqueville the leading moral principle in America is “interest properly/well understood”. The paper shows in which sense this principle can be applied also to human attitude towards nature and thus offer a possible limit to the search for profit.
