The Sagas, the Supernatural and Walter Scott. Some Notes
Original language description
The article deals with the supernatural element in Icelandic sagas as reflected in the works of Walter Scott. Scott’s approaches to this topic are analysed in his scholarly works, his free translation of parts of the Eyrbyggja saga and in his “Norse” novel The Pirate. The analyses shows that Scott acknowledged the presence of the supernatural in sagas as one of their integral elements when he wrote from the scholarly position, while he used different ways to rationalise it and even modified his source material when he wrote from the position of translator and novelist.
