Translating French Renaissance Authors into Czech

  • Original language description

The aim of the paper is to show, using the example of three French Renaissance authors (F. Rabelais, M. de Montaigne, J. Bodin), what is the current situation in the Czech Republic and what difficulties translators face when translating classic French Renaissance works. In the first part of the paper, I show what translations of these three authors are currently available to the Czech reader and I examine why there is no complete translation of their works in Czech (specifically Montaigne’s Essays). In the second part I focus on my translation experience of Montaigne’s essays and Bodin’s Six Books on the State. I believe that the difficulties of translation can be summarised under three headings: 1. the formal structure of the text (paragraphs, subchapter titles), which also includes the order of explanatory notes (e.g. the translation of Montaigne’s quotations), 2. the linguistic accuracy of the text. 3. the preservation of philosophical precision, both in terms of terminology and in terms of continuity with earlier thinkers. The demands on the translator here go beyond purely linguistic competence, which brings us back to the opening of the paper and thus to the question of why there is still no complete translation of Montaigne’s Essays in Czech.
