This introductory chapter explores the potential significance of the concept of radicalism in the study of medieval religion and heterodoxy. It surveys the historiography of movements such as the Waldensians, Wycliffites, and Hussites, and summarises the debates surrounding the concepts of medieval ‘religious movements’ and the so-called Radical Reformation. The chapter suggests that the category of radicalism, when considered as a relative and contextual notion, could be useful for describing late medieval religious groups.
