The languages in the correspondence of Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680)
Original language description
This study investigates the multilingual character of Athanasius Kircher’s (1602–1680) correspondence, one of the most extensive epistolary collections of the early modern Republic of Letters. Based on nearly 2,700 surviving letters, it analyses the distribution and functions of Latin, Italian, and a smaller set of vernacular and ancient languages. Using statistical and visualization methods, the paper demonstrates how linguistic choice was conditioned by geography, social rank, and communicative context. The findings reveal Latin as the principal medium of scholarly exchange, while vernacular languages were employed selectively, often to convey personal matters, requests, or gestures of courtesy.
