Aryl hydrocarbon receptor-mediated and estrogenic activities of oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and azaarenes originally identified in extracts of river sediments.

  • Original language description

The relative aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-inducing and estrogenic potencies of oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and azaarenes, identified in extracts of river sediments, were quantified using in vitro bioassays. Based on their relative potencies and concentrations determined in river sediments, our results suggest that dibenzo[a,h]acridine can significantly contribute to the overall AhR-mediated activity in river sediments, while no studied compound was found to contribute significantly toestrogen receptor-mediated activity
