Ischemia/reperfusion injury of rat small intestine: The effect of allopurinol dosage.

  • Original language description

Allopurinol was used to determine the contribution of xanthine oxidase-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) to the intestinal ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats. Allopurinol given intraperitoneally prevented the deleterious effects of ischemia/reperfusion, except the increased ROS production. On the other hand, allopurinol given in drinking water stimulated a further increase in lipoperoxidation in the intestinal mucosa. It can be concluded that the effects of allopurinol depended on the route of itsadministration
