Analytical isotachophoresis 1967–2022: From standard analytical technique to universal on-line concentration tool

  • Original language description

Analytical isotachophoresis is a well-established electrophoretic separation method based on discontinuous electrolyte systems. Originally used for the analysis of mixtures of ionic macrocomponents, it is now predominantly applied to trace analysis where analytes are stacked as narrow peaks at sharp moving boundaries formed by suitable bulk components. Isotachophoresis includes both concentrating and separating capability which makes it well-compatible with complex-matrix samples. In combination with sensitive detection techniques, detection limits in the range 1e100 ng/L can be reached. Recent applications show growing interest in the concentrating properties of isotachophoresis and its incorporation into multistage analytical and/or micropreparative procedures. This review aims to show how isotachophoresis is going with the times, continuously finds new formats and applications and contributes to the state-of-the-art of contemporary analytical chemistry.
