The paper is devoted to the early stages of the fatigue damage resulting in fatigue crack initiation. Cyclic hardening/softening behavior and related changes of microstructure are discussed. Special attention is paid to the persistent slip bands as one of the notable features of the cyclic plasticity and strain localization. Examples on polycrystals and single crystals are presented.
