A fracture mechanics assessment of surface cracks existing in protective layers of the composite pipes
Original language description
The influence of cracked coating surface on the integrity a coating-substrate system is analysed in this paper. The coated structure is modeled as a particular case of a bimaterial body consisting of thin layer on the massive substrate. The problem is studied under assumptions corresponding to small scale yielding conditions and ideal adhesion between protective layer and bulk material is assumed. The case of a through coating crack with its tip at the interface between coating and the substrate is analyzed in details. An approximate approach based on estimation of crack mouth opening displacement for thin protective layers is suggested. The results are applied to study of scratch resistance of two-layer plastic pipes.
