In marine and freshwater systems, thousands of organisms interact with a highly dynamic aquatic environment. Phytoplankton (tiny microscopic plants?algae), serve as the base of the aquatic food web, because of their ability to synthesise polyunsaturatedfatty acids. Phytoplankton are then consumed by zooplankton which are subsequently consumed by fish. The last members of this food chain are humans eating fish.
