Original language description
The chapter summarizes the main findings from the empirical studies and delineates future research on the relationships between personality and well-being. Although the studies pointed to invariant relations between personality traits such as extraversion and neuroticism and both hedonic and eudaimonic well-being, they also suggested that there may be different personality characteristics that are more relevant to well-being in various stages of development. Moreover, although personality traits may bedirectly related to well-being through their affective facets, they are more likely to influence an individual?s experience and behaviour indirectly. Research in the future should therefore consider, using longitudinal studies, both the interplay of individual personality levels (traits and characteristic adaptations) and that of personality and environmental factors, since personality variables are involved in many behaviours and outcomes that ensure adaptive functioning.
