Investigating positive and negative intergroup contact: Rectifying a long-standing positivity bias in the literature
Original language description
This chapter invites fuller investigations on the effects of positive and negative intergroup contact. We will start with an analysis of the reasons for an omission of negative intergroup contact in past research and the reasons to rectify this literature bias. An outline of research on the effects of positivity and negativity in psychology will follow and provide a larger context to very recent investigations on the valence of contact experiences with the outgroup. The central section of the chapter will discuss a model of intergroup valence asymmetry and then summarize research that has tested key components of this model, employing a variety of methodologies in several intergroup contexts. Lastly, we will suggest avenues for future research on the effects of positive and negative intergroup contact that extends its reach to novel intergroup processes such as collective action and has the potential to challenge current views on contact positivity and negativity (e.g., through a more detailed focus on attributional processes).
