The conference contribution focused on academic identities of academics who have left academic career at its early stage. On the basis of identified three types of academic identity trajectories (stable, lost, absent) and three ideals of academic (humanist, visionary and leader, absolute scientist) it showed academic identity paradox created in current academic environment when stable and strong academic identity can leads to givinng up academic ambition. This analytical outcome of the study challenges present knowlede of relation of academic identity and career ambitions, concretely that academic identity is an important precondition for academic career ambitions.
